I just got this yesterday and haven't had time to really read it yet, but I will warn users to be very careful about the photos. Quite a few are misidentified, and with edible plants that can be dangerous. Some examples:Black birch: the trunk photo is yellow birchBlack cherry: the flower pictures are of a plumJuniper (Juniperus communis): The photo is Juniperus virginianaRed bay: The photo is poor, but it is not red bay (Persea borbonia). It looks like gallberry (Ilex glabra)Stinging nettle: Photo is a Tragia species, which also stings, but is in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). I would not recommend eating Tragia because many family members are poisonous.Wild grape: The first photo shows a Smilax (S. smallii I believe), and in the second photo the foliage is Ligustrum sinense, and I think the fruits are an Ampelopsis, not a wild grape.Wild plum: The flower photo is a Malus (crabapple)
Unfortunately, there are very few good things about this book. It can be a reference for plants edible in the Southeast, but that's about it.- Horrible choice of photos throughout the book that don't show the plants in a representative way (e.g. not showing the plants clearly, focused on the wrong parts, or only certain less useful stages of growth). There's even a plant where, in the photo, all of its leaves are chewed through and through by bugs or snails... How is that helpful?! Also, as some other reviews pointed out, some of the pictures are just wrong altogether- There's quite a few unfortunate omissions. How can you talk about cattails and not mention at all that their rhizomes are edible? And then leave 1/3 of the page blank?- This book is a little careless and irresponsible: too many plants say that they can be harvested as much as you want. There's no real sense of stewardship /responsibility/accountability throughout the book. Sure, some plants may be abundant in some places, but how much you harvest should be a judgement call every single time. And in no situation should we ever feel like we can harvest the entirety of a plant in any location (the author clearly forgot about local wildlife that may depend on these plants)- The book describes the general types of locations each plant grows in, but it doesn't give an actual geographical range- The book is extremely straight to the point. There's no history, no real anecdotes, no stories. Most other foraging books out there will often mention native Americans and their uses of the plants as well as the author's personal stories involving the plants... Here t's just: this is what it is, this is how you use it & I personally like to cook it this way. How can you talk about Wapato and not mention native Americans at all?? 😟Honestly, I'm kind of mad about this book.
